Illegal rubbish dumping

Illegal dumping is the deliberate or unauthorised dumping, tipping or burying of waste on land that is not licensed or fit to accept that waste.

Dumped rubbish can include household waste, green waste, building and demolition materials, household items such as appliances and electronic waste, furniture, mattresses, industrial wastes,packaging, old tyres and any other materials that have been disposed of inappropriately.

Illegal dumping is a crime that is taken seriously by Mount Alexander Shire Council. Those found to be guilty of illegally dumping rubbish will face fines and other penalties.

Dumping rubbish can threaten the healthy and safety of the community.

Illegal dumping can threaten wildlife, promote the spread of weeds and pests and lead to long-term contamination of land, waterways and groundwater.

In addition to looking unsightly and unsafe, dumped rubbish including sharp objects, asbestos, nappies and medical waste are dangerous and can cause major health hazards.

You can report illegal dumping by contacting Mount Alexander Shire Council on (03) 5471 1700 and a Council officer will investigate the dumped rubbish.

If you witness somebody illegally dumping their rubbish on a street, footpath, park or other public space, please phone the 24-hour EPA pollution hotline on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).
