Waste contractor suspends service

Waste and recycling bins

Residents are urged to leave out their bins as Council works to quickly resolve a suspension of kerbside rubbish and recycling collection.

Wednesday 7 March 2018

Mount Alexander Shire Council was informed this morning that its rubbish and recycling collector Wheelie Waste has immediately suspended collection of kerbside waste and recycling from homes in the shire.

Wheelie Waste informed Council the decision is in protest of the State Government’s lack of detail regarding a rebate to address the increased cost of recycling.

“This is extremely disappointing for residents, who quite rightly expect to have their bins collected,” said Rebecca Stockfeld, Acting Director Sustainable Development, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We have been working with Wheelie Waste to avoid this happening and we are very disappointed they are taking such a drastic step with no notice,” said Ms Stockfeld.

Ms Stockfeld said she encourages residents to keep out their bins as they hope to resolve the situation quickly.

“Be assured that while your bins may not be collected today we are certainly doing all we can to ensure the collection starts again as soon as possible,” said Ms Stockfeld.

“We’ll keep the community updated about the resumption of collection services,” she said.

“We are in contact with other local councils in a similar position, and will continue to work with the State Government and industry to resolve this as soon as possible.”
