Refugee Week celebrations will this year centre on food, song and stories to bring people to together and everyone is invited to join in.

The week aims to promote better understanding between different communities and encourage successful integration, enabling refugees to live safely and to continue to make a valuable contribution to Australia.

Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) Castlemaine has pulled together a lively and interesting program of local events.

One of the highlights is a multicultural vegetarian feast, with people of all faiths coming together to share food and stories.

“We’re trying to make it a light-hearted and fun evening that celebrates people from different cultures and backgrounds,” said Dr Bev Campbell, RAR Chairperson.

The week-long local program also includes a community singing session and meal, vigil, author events and concert.

“Through these events we hope to raise the profile of people who are refugees and raise vital funds to support local refugee families and refugee agencies,” said Dr Campbell.

“We extend a warm invitation to everyone to join us and help to build connections within the community,” she said.

“We want to keep people who are refugees and asylum seekers at the forefront of our mind. It’s a global problem that goes to the heart of human rights.”

The Refugee Council of Australia has chosen #With Refugees: A world of stories as the theme of this year’s week-long celebrations.

The local program has been organised by RAR Castlemaine in partnership with Mount Alexander Shire Council, Castlemaine Goldfields Library, Castlemaine Uniting Church, Anglican Parish of Castlemaine and Vocal Nosh. Find out event details at www.ruralaustraliansforrefugees.org.au/Castlemaine.

Refugee Week runs nationally from Sunday 16 – Saturday 22 June. Mount Alexander Shire was declared a Refugee Welcome Zone in 2014.
