Mount Alexander Shire Council has received an amended planning permit application for a supermarket development on the former gasworks site in Castlemaine, which is open for public comment.

“The planning permit application (PA054/2019) proposes a supermarket with a floor area of approximately 3,300m2, two shops (including a bottle shop), car parking and associated landscaping and road works,” said Shannon Meadows, Manager, Development Services, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“The proposed development is in a pocket located on Duke, Forest and Urquhart streets.

“The planning permit application was first received in July 2019 proposing a 3,400m2 supermarket, shops and underground carpark,” said Mr Meadows.

“The applications and plans have been revised to allow for 108 onsite parking spaces at ground level, in addition to 62 on-street car parking within Urquhart Street.”

The size and proposed plans submitted by the developer Lascorp indicate the proposed supermarket could be a Woolworths.
Staff will assess the planning permit under the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme and will make a recommendation, once all information has been received and assessed.

The application has been referred to relevant authorities including the North Central Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn Murray Water, the Department of Transport, Coliban Water and the Environmental Protection Authority for information.
Councillors are not expected to make a decision on the planning application at a Council meeting until at least November or December this year.

In the meantime Council encourages anyone who may be affected by the granting of a permit to review the planning application on Council’s website and make a submission.

An objection or submission can be lodged via Greenlight or sent in writing to: Mount Alexander Shire Council, PO Box 185, Castlemaine VIC 3450.

Background
Mount Alexander Shire Council issued a planning permit for a 1,500m2 supermarket development at the site in April 2018, which is still valid.

The land was rezoned and a planning permit issued after a review of the proposal by an independent panel, appointed by the Minister for Planning.

The developer has since purchased neighbouring properties to expand the proposed site.
