Council is urging local residents and property owners to look out for important information during Fire Action Week which runs from 19 to 25 October.

Fire Action Week, coordinated by the Country Fire Authority is Victoria's annual fire planning and preparation week, signalling the start of summer fire preparedness in partnership with emergency services.

Making informed decisions is vital to your safety before, during and after a fire. Fire Action Week is a great opportunity to understand more about the fire risk where you live and get prepared.

  • Get started on preparing your property for the Fire Danger Period.
  • Get to know what fire risk exists in your area.
  • Know your weather, Know your risk.
  • Talk to your family, friends and neighbours about what you’ll do on hot, dry and windy days and your plans to stay safe from fire, well in advance of an emergency.
  • Start checking Fire Danger Ratings and warnings – make sure you understand the three levels of warnings and what they mean and what you should do.
  • Stay informed by using more than one source of information. Tune in to ABC local radio, commercial and designated community radio stations or Sky News TV, phone the VicEmergency Hotline (1800 226 226), visit emergency.vic.gov.au and download the VicEmergency App. Follow VicEmergency and the CFA on social media.
  • Prepare your emergency plan, and an emergency kit of essentials including important documents, medications, a mobile phone, torch, battery operated radio, money and clothes, water, blankets , face masks and sanitiser to remain COVID safe.
  • Be prepared for power failure in extreme weather conditions. Read the Power Outage Guide.

Over the summer months, you'll continue to see fire safety messages promoted through television, radio, newspapers, outdoor and digital advertisements, as well as through social media channels.

These messages will remind Victorians to understand their local risk, talk to their loved ones about how to stay safe, and encourage communities to take responsibility for their own safety.

In the lead-up to summer, CFA and FRV brigades around the state are running Fire Safety Essentials online sessions to help you understand your fire risk and help you prepare. To find out more visit cfa.vic.gov.au/about/whats-on.
