Powercor is expected to start the undergrounding of power in the central business district of Maldon in November, a major milestone in the Maldon Streetscape Revitalisation Project.

The undergrounding of power will improve electricity network reliability, bushfire safety and views of the township along Maldon’s historic streetscapes.

The project will be divided in to multiple phases with work taking place from November through to June 2021. Works include trenching in preparation for the new underground conduits, installation of cabinets as well as the upgrade of streetlights.

“We know our community treasures the historic streetscapes of Maldon, and are working with members of the Maldon Streetscape Steering Committee to ensure heritage and commercial impacts are taken into consideration,” said Jess Howard, Director Infrastructure and Development, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We’ll also make the design documents available on our website when they become available to keep the community informed about the project,” she said.

The project team is working closely with Powercor on the schedule of works to minimise disruption in Main Street through the peak December period.

Staff are also working with Powercor to confirm the scope and costs of works for the electrical connections needed to run the power from the pits into the buildings.

“We’ll be making this information available to affected retailers and property owners once it has been finalised,” said Ms Howard.

“It is important these works align with heritage design requirements, and we will continue to work through these details with the local working groups. We don’t expect any connection changeovers to commence until at least December.

“Thank you to everyone in the community for your contribution and input into this important project so far,” she said.

“We’re pleased to be working with the council on this exciting project,” said Brenton McKenry, Rural Projects Team Leader, Powercor.

“We are committed to minimising the impacts of the works in consultation with council and the community, and sharing regular updates with residents and traders on our progress,” he said.

Background
The undergrounding of power is one of three projects that make up the Maldon Streetscape Revitalisation Project.

Council entered a contract with Powercor to underground the power in Maldon in September.

The Victorian Government is contributing $ 4.5 million towards the project through the Crisis Committee of Cabinet – Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. Under the funding arrangement, the works must start in 2020.
