Project summary

Mount Alexander Shire Council is focused on improving safety, accessibility and encouraging walking throughout the shire through the continued improvement of its footpath network.

As part of this focus, Mount Alexander Shire Council is about to commence the design of pedestrian crossing points on Walker Street, Castlemaine, as well as a new sealed footpath, on The Mill side of Walker Street. The footpath will connect the pedestrian crossing at the railway line to the start of the existing sealed path at the bridge crossing at Barkers Creek.

These design works are funded by the 2019 TAC Local Government Grant Program.

Project aim

The aims of this project include:
• The design of pedestrian crossing points linking two of Castlemaine’s popular tourist attractions including The Mill precinct and the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, and providing improved access to Castlemaine Pool, Big4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park and Castlemaine Hospital.
• To improve accessibility through the design of a sealed path between the proposed pedestrian crossing points and the railway crossing on The Mill side of Walker Street.

Design considerations

As Castlemaine’s popularity with tourists increases there is a need for safe and visible pedestrian access between the Castlemaine Botanical Garden and The Mill.

The design project proposes the following:
• Crossing points – one at the western end of Walker Street adjacent to the Botanical Gardens maintenance entrance and one at the corner of Walker Street and Downes Road.
• A sealed 1.5m wide asphalt path in place of the existing track on The Mill side of Walker Street.
• Installation of ground warning tactiles (TGSI’s).
• Review of existing footbridge across open table drain.

Key areas of note

Still in the planning and design phase, we welcome community feedback and input including:
• The location of pedestrian crossing points.
• Any other local considerations/opportunities associated with this project.

Please send your feedback to our Project Manager (details below) prior to the Monday 4 January 2021.

Where are we now?

The proposed location of the crossing points and footpath is shown below. View the concept plans.

What happens next

We will review the community feedback received on this project. This feedback will be considered in the final design of the footpath and pedestrian crossings and the final design prepared by in early 2021 and made available on this website once completed.

Future construction of the project will be dependent on funding availability and council priorities.
