Small Town Streetscapes

Council has identified sections of Campbells Creek, Chewton, Elphinstone, Guildford, Newstead and Taradale which require the construction of streetscapes to provide street beautification, supporting infrastructure for local businesses and creation of town centres to improve economic activity and community connections.

Council successfully applied for a grant from Regional Development Victoria’s Regional Development Infrastructure Fund, which will contribute towards the implementation of the streetscape plans for the townships of Campbells Creek, Elphinstone, and Taradale.

We are still working on the final designs for Chewton, Guildford and Newstead.

This aims of this project include:

• Increasing liveability in each town by improving the attractiveness and safety of town centres.
• Creating improved town centres though the provision of supporting infrastructure to the main streets, improving economic growth in the retail, trade, food and accommodation sectors.
• Increasing visitation and tourism through infrastructure such as interpretive and directional signage to sites of interest.
• Improving beautification, social connections and support through active transport through infrastructure.
• Attracting new residents to townships.
• Increasing land/property value of the townships.

The project outcomes will include:

• The delivery of on the ground improvements to the town centres.
• Strengthened character of the town centres.
• Improved economic activity and community connections.

We are working to secure the services of a qualified contractor to undertake the civil works in Campbells Creek, Elphinstone and Taradale.

Council has already completed some minor works in Chewton, Guildford and Newstead including:

Chewton
• Fencing improvements at Soldiers Memorial Park and Chewton pool
• The installation of bike racks out the front of the Chewton Post Office and Chewton Pool.

Guildford
• The installation of bike racks out the front of the Guildford General Store and Guildford Hotel
• Indigenous planting alongside John Powell Reserve
• Street tree planting alongside Guildford Public Hall and John Powell Reserve
• Nature strip planting between Guildford Hotel and Guildford Post Office.

Newstead
• The installation of gates at Newstead Park
• Additional seating at Newstead Bakery and Café.

Further streetscape improvement works in Chewton, Guildford and Newstead are planned in future years.
