Outdoor pools in our shire are due to open for the season on 4 December, temperature-depending, for fun and fitness activities including aqua aerobics and lap swimming.

Wednesday 1 December 2021

Outdoor swimming pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead are due to open when the pool season kicks off on Saturday 4 December.

Managed and operated by YMCA Victoria, each of the four pools will offer lots of fun for families over summer, ranging from inflatable fun sessions for kids, community events, BBQs and live music. Plus VICSWIM lessons are on offer and YMCA Victoria can arrange lap swimming, aqua aerobics, junior lifeguard programs and aqua playgroups where there is demand.

Entry will be free at all pools on Australia Day on January 26.

It’s also free to girls and women aged 12 to 18 during February as part of a program called This Girl Can which supports Victorian women to embrace activity.

Acting Manager of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities with Mount Alexander Shire Council, Karen Evennett said that after such a difficult year, pools offered an especially great venue for friends, families and communities to come together

“There’s no better place to enjoy summer than the local pool,” Ms Evennett said.

VICSWIM swimming lessons at each pool can be booked directly through the VICSWIM website. Lane hire and birthday party bookings are also available.

Some safety measures apply.

For example, adult supervision of children is compulsory at all public pools. One adult can supervise up to two children aged under five years or up to four children aged five to nine years.

This is part of the Victorian Government’s water safety education program called Watch Around Water.

All lifeguards are qualified and fully vaccinated to provide safe supervision. Patrons aged 12 years and 2 months or more will need to check in via the QR code and show their digital vaccination certificate. Exemptions may apply for VICSWIM lessons. Check with your pool.

Pools will not open on days when the temperature, forecast for Castlemaine on the Bureau of Meteorology website at 6.00pm the previous day, is lower than 23ºC.

They will be closed for declared Code Red Days and on Christmas Day.

Council also provides funding each year to support the Chewton Pool, run for the community, by the community.

Pools will close for the season at the end of the Labour Day long weekend in March 2022.
