Mount Alexander Shire Council invites the community to have its say on the concept design to upgrade the Newstead flood levee to provide a better level of protection for the community.

A community information session on Wednesday 10 May will give residents the chance to review the findings from a comprehensive study of the flood levee and proposed changes to strengthen the level of protection.

“We encourage residents and any interested community groups and business representatives to come along and look at the design and provide feedback,” said Jason Taylor, Director Sustainable Development.

“Participants will be able to view the concept design and ask questions about the condition of the levee including its strengths and potential weaknesses,” he said.

Council engaged consultants to assess the condition of the levee following the 2011 floods, which included an assessment of levee construction material and the flood gate system.

Information on the proposed changes will be sent to affected residents and will also be available on the “Have Your Say” section of Council’s website from early May.

“Community feedback will be considered before plans for the Newstead levee are finalised in July,” said Mr Taylor.
