People of all ages and backgrounds are invited to attend a series of community events to celebrate Refugee Week from Sunday 18 June to Saturday 24 June.

Events include a charity concert to celebrate World Refugee Day, film screenings and the Refugee Week Forum to continue the conversation on how local community and service providers can work together to welcome refugees.

Refugee Week has been an annual event in Australia since 1980 to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

Along with World Refugee Day on Wednesday 20 June, it provides a forum to focus attention on the journey of refugees, as well as their determination and will to survive.

“Refugee Week is an opportunity to recognise the great courage and resilience of refugees,” said Lisa Knight, Director Corporate and Community Services.

“This is a chance for the community to share in the spirit of unity and respect, and acknowledge those who have had to leave their home country for fear of persecution.”

Rural Australians for Refugees Castlemaine developed the program in partnership with Mount Alexander Shire Council. The program of events is supported by Castlemaine Goldfields Library, Australian Red Cross and Anglican Church Castlemaine.

Programs are available in the What’s on section of our website or pick up a copy at various locations across the shire including the Civic Centre, Castlemaine District and Community Health, Castlemaine and Maldon Visitor Information Centres and Castlemaine Library.

Council committed to being a Refugee Welcome Zone in 2014. Refugee Welcome Zones are an initiative of the Refugee Council of Australia to uphold human rights, demonstrate compassion, and enhance cultural and religious diversity in the community.
