Fight food waste

Come along to a free two-hour workshop and learn how to fight food waste.

Thursday 15 June 2017

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Sustainable Living Workshop Series is off to a flying start, with workshops on rocket stoves, green cleaning and propagating natives all proving popular.

The series is set to continue this month with a free workshop on fighting food waste.

Nikki Valentini, Coordinator of The Growing Abundance Project will lead the workshop at the Castlemaine Town Hall from 10.30am – 12.30pm on Saturday 24 June.

Australian households waste one in every five bags of groceries. Much of the organic waste ends up in landfill where it breaks down and produces methane gas contributing to climate change.

“Having the skills to make the most of the food you have at hand is empowering and a great way to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions” said Ms Valentini.

“Reducing food waste can also save the average household more than $2,000 each year,” she said.

Participants will learn food waste fighting tips and tricks from Nikki, and then enjoy a making and tasting session after the workshop.

Bookings are required for this free event. For more information and bookings contact Dallas Giles, Healthy Environments Administration Officer, on 5471 1768 or email d.giles@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

The Sustainable Living Workshop Series was developed to assist residents to live and work more sustainably as part of Council’s plan to foster the development of environmentally responsible and liveable communities.
