Refugee Week activities

Everyone is invited to attend events in celebration of Refugee Week from Sunday 18 June to Sunday 25 June. Local activities include a charity concert, film screenings and Friends of Refugees Dinner. A Refugee Week Forum will be held from 9.30am – 12.30pm on Wednesday 21 June at Castlemaine Town Hall. Bookings are preferred via www.eventbrite.com.au.

Programs are available in the What’s on section of Council’s website or pick up a copy at the Civic Centre, Castlemaine District and Community Health, Castlemaine and Maldon Visitor Information Centres and Castlemaine Library. Local art at winter exhibition

Head to the historic Market Building in Castlemaine to see artworks by 95 local artists as part of the Market Art Winter Exhibition. The exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, jewellery, photography, textiles and more. All displayed artworks are for sale. The exhibition is on until Sunday 3 September. The Market Building is open every day from 9.00am to 5.00pm. The exhibition is free of charge and everyone is welcome.

Review final levee designs

The community is invited to attend a drop in session to review the final designs of the six flood protection levees planned around Castlemaine and Campbells Creek. The drop in session will be held from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday 20 June at the Ray Bradfield Room, next to Victory Park in Castlemaine. Access is through the supermarket car park. Solar scheme for pensioners

Pensioners can now sign up to install a solar energy system to save money on their electricity bill. The Solar Savers program offers a low-interest loan that has no upfront outlay and is gradually paid off over 10 years by power bill savings. Food Waste Workshop

Join Nikki Valentini from The Growing Abundance Project as she guides you through some clever and delicious ways to make the most of the food you have at hand. This free workshop is part of Council’s Sustainable Living Workshop Series. It will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 24 June at the Castlemaine Town Hall. Apply now for Battle of the Bands

Bands, soloists, duos, hip hop artists and acoustic acts can now apply to be a part of the annual local heat for Mount Alexander FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands. The competition is open to young people aged between 12 and 25 years who live, work or play in the shire. Application forms are due by Monday 17 July. They are available from various locations around the shire or from the Young People section of Council’s website. The event will be held on Friday 4 August at the Castlemaine Theatre Royal. Call for volunteers

Castlemaine District Community Health (CDCH) is calling for community volunteers to join the L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program. The program assists young people aged 16-20, who are disadvantaged in their access to a supervising driver, achieve 120 hours of supervised driving practice. Driver mentors are trained to guide young learners through the various stages of driving. They have the use of a CDCH vehicle. On-road costs and insurance are covered. If you are interested in volunteering as a L2P mentor, contact Lisa on 5479 1000 or email@cdch.com.au. The L2P Program is funded by the TAC, administered by VicRoads and supported by Council.
