A free art exhibition in central Castlemaine confirms Mount Alexander Shire’s well deserved reputation as a cultural and artistic hub.

Works from 95 local artists are on display at the recently opened Market Art Winter Exhibition in the historic Market Building in Mostyn Street.

“This is a great chance to see fantastic works from some the region’s finest artists,” said Lisa Knight, Director Corporate and Community Services, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“With all displayed works on sale, you might even be tempted to take a piece home,” said Ms Knight.

The exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, jewellery, glassware, prints, photography, textiles and more. Artworks start from $15.

Sharing floor space with the Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre means the exhibition is easily accessible to the region’s many tourists.

“More than 20,000 people visited the building when the summer exhibition was on earlier this year, and 154 pieces of artworks valued at $21,980 in total were sold,” said Ms Knight.

“This is a great local event and I encourage everyone to come along and see the artistic talent of the region.”

The exhibition is on until Sunday 3 September.

The Market Building is located at 44 Mostyn Street, Castlemaine and is open every day from 9.00am – 5.00pm.

The exhibition is coordinated by Mount Alexander Shire Council. One of the objectives in the recently adopted Council Plan 2017-2021 is to support and promote the cultural and artistic communities.
