Thursday 27 July 2017

Mount Alexander Shire Council is inviting local residents to attend a special workshop on composting and worm farming in August.

Peter Rutherford from the Kimbriki Eco House and Garden Education Centre will lead the workshop at the Ray Bradfield Room in Castlemaine from 10.00am – 12.00pm on Saturday 12 August.

The workshop will cover topics such as setting up and maintaining your compost bins or worm farms, what items can go in each system, the different methods of composting, and how you can use compost, worm castings and worm juice on your garden. Participants will also find out how to avoid the most common problems with compost bins and worm farms.

“Composting and worm farming are positive alternatives to disposing of your food and garden waste in the rubbish bin,” said Mr Rutherford.

“You can help reduce the amount of organic waste disposed of in landfill, in turn reducing the production of greenhouse gases,” he said.

Peter Rutherford has been the Senior Eco Gardener at the Sydney based Kimbriki Eco House and Garden Education Centre for more than 18 years. He is a social ecologist, horticulturalist and educator with an extensive knowledge of soils and microbes and the sciences of composting and worm farming.

With an infectious passion for sustainable living, Peter inspires both adults and children to live more sustainably.

Peter has been a presenter on the ABC’s popular Gardening Australia as well as appearing on many gardening and lifestyle television programs promoting the benefits of composting, worm farming, and organic gardening and farming.

Bookings are required for this free event. For more information and bookings contact Dallas Giles, Healthy Environments Administration Officer, on 5471 1768 or email d.giles@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

The workshop forms part of Council’s commitment to working towards zero waste in Mount Alexander Shire.
