Mount Alexander Shire Council welcomed six new Australian citizens at a civic ceremony held in Castlemaine last week.

Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire Sharon Telford conducted the ceremony and lead the citizens in their pledge to become Australians.

Jaara Jaara elder Uncle Rick Nelson participated in the ceremony and shared details on the history and customs of local traditional owners. He also conducted an individual Welcome to Country for each new citizen.

Mayor Telford thanked the six participants and congratulated them on becoming Australian citizens.

“Becoming an Australian citizen is not easy. All six new citizens have worked incredibly hard over a long period of time to be here today,” said Mayor Telford.

“On behalf of Council I extend my very best wishes and congratulate you on this special achievement,” she said.

The new citizens hail from the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand, Wales and South Africa.

This was the third citizenship ceremony held in Mount Alexander Shire in 2017, with a total of 21 Australian citizens welcomed this year.
