Free creative workshop to repurpose old t-shirts

Sign up to a free workshop in October and learn how easy it is to create your own shopping bag or scarf.

To support the growing push to reduce waste, Mount Alexander Shire Council invites community members to come along to a free workshop and learn how to create bags, headwear, belts and scarves from old t-shirts.

“It’s hard to believe, but Australians send more than $500 million of clothing to landfill each year,” said Ben Bowman, Manager Healthy Environments, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“We know that op shops receive more donations than they can handle. Re-use, repair, re-fashion, up-cycle, re-purpose are all great options before recycling,” said Mr Bowman.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will be guided through a number of ways to give t-shirts a new purpose.

“Bring along an old t-shirt or two and learn easy ways to repurpose into things like a bag, belt or turban using only basic hand sewing skills,” said Mr Bowman.

“Ladies from the Castlemaine Country Women’s Association are leading this fun and interactive workshop and we encourage everyone to come along.

“Maybe you could consider making your very own reusable shopping bag, or make one for a friend!” he said.
