Council to convene LGBTIQ roundtable

Mount Alexander Shire Council has unanimously resolved to convene a roundtable to determine how to best support equality for the LGBTIQ community now and in the long term.

At the Ordinary Meeting of Council last night, Councillors were divided over a motion to support the principle of equality in marriage and prominently display the rainbow flag during the survey period. Instead Councillors agreed to support an alternate motion to convene a roundtable with health partners and local representatives or organisations from the LGBTIQ community by December.

“The decision on the notice of motion last night was not a yes or no vote towards same sex marriage,” said Sharon Telford, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire.

“Rather, based on recent discussions with members of our community, four Councillors could not agree it is the responsibility of Local Government to develop a position on same sex marriage,” said Cr Telford.

“The roundtable will be a great opportunity to inform Council of LGBTIQ needs. These needs were not expressed in all of the consultation for the Council Plan.

“All Councillors agreed that we need now to understand this community much better and we look forward to working with them through the roundtable.

“We now know there is a lot of work we need to do in this space. We look forward to identifying the actions and the support needed,” she said.

Council is urging residents to make sure they return their postal vote to have a say on same sex marriage by 7 November.
