Shire residents can dispose of green waste for free at the Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities from Saturday 28 October to Sunday 12 November. Green waste includes grass clippings and wood and tree branches less than 10cm in diameter. The waste must be free of rubbish and declared noxious weeds. Residents are encouraged to use this opportunity to prepare their property for the fire season. For more information visit the Waste Facilities page on Council's website.

Councillor and community forum

Everyone is invited to a one-hour community forum at Guildford. This is your chance to ask questions and provide feedback on Council’s activities. The forum will be held from 5.00pm to 6.00pm on Tuesday 24 October at the Guildford Hall. RSVP to Tracey Roberts on 5471 1705 or t.roberts@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Share your thoughts on family needs

Don't forget to complete a survey on the needs of young children and families and help shape an Early Years Plan for our shire. The survey is available on the Have Your Say section of Council’s website or at the Civic Centre, Maternal and Child Health Centre, Castlemaine Library, kindergartens and community centres. The survey closes on Friday 20 October and participants go into the draw to win some great prizes.

Wamble along Forest Creek

Come along on a walking-ramble or ‘wamble’ along Forest Creek and learn about the ecosystem, plants and wildlife of this important waterway. Hear from Jon Leevers from Castlemaine Landcare Group and Kylie Stafford, Council’s Natural Environment Officer. The free event will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 28 October. To register contact Dallas Giles on 5471 1768 or d.giles@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Get active in Walk to School Month

Primary school students around the shire are walking, riding and scooting to school throughout October as part of Walk to School Month. There are many great activities planned including school visits by Luke Schoolwalker. If you usually drive to school why not meet up with friends at a local cafe and walk together? You could also park further away from school and walk the rest of the way. Get active and have some fun on your way to school. Council is a proud supporter of this VicHealth initiative.

Solar scheme to soon close

Pensioners living in the shire have until the end of October to sign up for the Solar Savers program. The program offers pensioners a special low-interest loan to install a solar energy system. The loan has no upfront costs and is gradually paid off over 10 years by power bill savings. To learn more call Solar Savers on (03) 9385 8512 or visit www.solarsavers.org.au.
