Council proposes to lease former college

To support local business and community groups, Mount Alexander Shire Council is seeking to lease the former Castlemaine Secondary College campus on Etty Street.

Council plans to sublease the site to the not-for-profit organisation Workspace Australia. The organisation provides support to local job-seekers and 60 small businesses in Castlemaine and Maldon.

Workspace Australia currently leases the old hospital site on Halford Street in Castlemaine. Their lease expires in November 2018. They have identified the Etty Street site as the most suitable replacement site.

“Council sees this as a good option to ensure the vacant college buildings are maintained and are used for the benefit of the community,” said Ben Grounds, Manager Community Places and Spaces, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Workspace Australia has worked with U3A, Castlemaine Theatre Company and Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre to have the Victorian Government make the site available for community use.

Council proposes to lease the Etty Street campus from the Department of Education and Training for five years at a peppercorn rent. Council will then sublease the site to Workspace Australia, passing on all obligations of the lease.

The permitted use will include office space, educational, community and commercial activities. Council will also require space to be made available for community groups.

“We are interested in hearing from the community what they think of the proposal to lease the premises and invite public submissions,” said Mr Grounds.

Written submissions will be accepted until 5.00pm on Monday 20 November.

Submissions should be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Mount Alexander Shire Council, PO Box 185, Castlemaine VIC 3450, or emailed to info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

Submissions will be considered in accordance with Section 223 of the Local Government Act 1989. Submitters need to indicate whether they wish to be heard before Council at a Special Meeting of Council to be held at 6.00pm Tuesday 28 November at the Civic Centre.
