Learn how to keep backyard chickens

Chook and chick

Come along to a free workshop at Maldon and learn how to keep happy and healthy chickens in your backyard.

Monday 30 October 2017

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Sustainable Living Workshop Series is set to wind up for another year with a free workshop on keeping backyard chickens.

Local sustainability educator Joel Meadows will lead the workshop at the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre from 10.30am – 12.30pm on Saturday 25 November.

The workshop will cover topics such as good chook health, the social life of chooks, what to feed them and how to avoid odours while building great soil.

“Keeping backyard chooks is a great way to connect with nature, produce wholesome food, kick-start garden fertility and reduce waste, all bundled up in feather-clad enjoyment,” said Joel Meadows from Very Edible Gardens.

“Home grown eggs from free-range chooks, fed on kitchen and garden scraps, with lots of access to sunshine and green pick are unlike anything you have tasted from a shop.”

“Keeping backyard chooks helps us hone our skills of observation and interaction with living, productive systems. It also enriches our experience of good food,” said Mr Meadows.

Home chicken husbandry is making a global resurgence, inspired by the benefits of cheaper eggs, greater soil fertility, and the companionship these vivacious ladies provide.

Participants will learn how to care for chickens and integrate them into highly productive and mutually beneficial backyard food systems.
