Local community organisations and service providers met in Castlemaine last week to gain a better understanding of the needs of families with children 0-8 years of age.

The inaugural Mount Alexander Early Years forum was hosted by Mount Alexander Shire Council to explore the steps needed to guide the development and coordination of early years’ services, programs and partnership activities across the shire.

Representatives from State Government, local service providers, kindergarten committees, childcare centres, teachers and the community were amongst many that attended the forum.

“This was a wonderful start to the important conversation on the needs of the children and families in our community,” said Lisa Knight, Director Corporate and Community Services, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“It also helped us to identify the support and services available in the shire and the opportunities to work together to fill in some of the gaps,” said Ms Knight.

Outcomes of the forum will contribute to the development of a Municipal Early Years Plan to support Council’s commitment to facilitating an accessible range of services for all including children, young people and families.

A draft Municipal Early Years Plan will be developed and available for community feedback in February 2018.

For further information about the plan, or to register for the next forum, please contact Gaynor Atkin, Manager Community Partnerships, on 5471 1821 or email g.atkin@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.
