Country Fire Authority (CFA) has announced the Fire Danger Period for the North Central Fire District, which includes Mount Alexander Shire, will begin on Monday 20 November 2017.

This means you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.

“You can still light a barbecue or fire, but you need to understand the restrictions around when it is and is not allowed,” said Jason Amos, Emergency Management Coordinator, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“CFA has developed a useful brochure – Can I or can’t I? – that outlines the restrictions for lighting fires during the Fire Danger Period,” said Mr Amos.

The brochure is available on CFA’s website.

Mr Amos said fire preparations around the shire are going well but the community needs to stay vigilant.

“Our Fire Prevention Officer and CFA members have been out and about inspecting properties and have commented on the fantastic job people are doing right across the shire with cleaning up their land,” said Mr Amos.

“If you haven’t already, make sure you clear out gutters, move stacks of wood away from your home and regularly mow your lawns,” he said.

“It’s also important to spend time now to finalise your fire plan. This will help you to remember what needs to be done during an emergency.”

Council encourages residents to download the VicEmergency app for rating updates and emergency alerts to be sent directly to your phone.

Fire danger ratings tell you how dangerous a fire would be if one started. Leaving early is the safest option.

“Keep an eye on the warning levels and make sure to pack important documents, photos, medication, money and clothes so you can leave easily,” said Mr Amos.

Fire plan templates are available from the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or VicEmergency website www.emergency.vic.gov.au.

Read more about fire restrictions during the Fire Danger Period at the CFA's website. The Fire Danger Period will run through to 1 May 2018.

Council will continue fire prevention property inspections throughout November and into December.
