Planning for an LGBTIQ Roundtable in Mount Alexander Shire is well underway following meetings with representatives from the LGBTIQ community.

At the Council Meeting in September, Mount Alexander Shire Council committed to setting up a roundtable to help Council develop an informed position on how to best support LGBTIQ equality.

Mount Alexander Shire Council Mayor Bronwen Machin said that while the roundtable is on track for early 2018, Council won’t make the initial December deadline it was working towards.

“We have had held two really informative meetings with representatives of the LGBTIQ community who were at the Council meeting in September,” said Mayor Machin.

“We discussed the possible terms of reference and a process for selecting people to join the roundtable discussions.

“As a result we have all agreed to slow down the process to ensure we get it right and ensure we have the right mix of people at the table,” said Mayor Machin.

Development of the Terms of Reference and the Expression of Interest process for joining the LGBTIQ Roundtable are well underway and more information will be provided in the coming months.

“We acknowledge the last few months have been difficult and are grateful to the representatives that have consistently engaged with us to provide sound advice on how to proceed with the roundtable initiative.

“We hope the roundtable will help Council understand some of the ways we and others can support the Mount Alexander LGBTIQ community in the long and short term, with tangible actions to achieve this identified.

“We would also like to thank Castlemaine Community House for their continued support.”

Council supports equality for all members of the community and is committed to making Mount Alexander Shire a safe, supportive and inclusive place for everyone.
