Mount Alexander Shire residents can drop storm-related green waste for free at Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities until 31 December.

Thursday 21 December 2017

To help residents clean up their properties after the severe weather event on Tuesday Council is offering free disposal of storm-related green waste to local residents until New Year’s Eve.

Mount Alexander Shire residents affected by the storm will be able dispose of the green waste debris lying around their property at the Castlemaine and Maldon waste facilities at no charge from Thursday 21 December to Sunday 31 December (excluding Christmas Day).

“We are encouraging residents to take advantage of this free green waste disposal period to clear their property of green waste debris following the significant storm event that hit the shire on the 19 December,” said Rebeca Stockfeld, Acting Director Sustainable Development.

“We recognise that Christmas is a busy time so this will provide some time between the Christmas and New Year period for people to clean up their properties after the storm,” she said.

During this time residents can drop off storm-related green waste and debris such as twigs, leaves, branches and logs. The free disposal period does not apply to normal garden waste or grass clippings. Residents are encouraged to chop large timber into shorter lengths.

Green waste must also free of contaminants such as rubbish and declared noxious weeds. The material must be emptied from plastic bags prior to disposal.

Proof of residence in the shire will be required on entry. Normal green waste fees will apply to businesses or residents acting on behalf of businesses.

Loads containing standard garden waste, grass clippings and items other than green waste will be charged accordingly. Normal gate fees will apply from New Year’s Day.

What green waste will be accepted?

• Storm related green waste
• Natural wood and tree branches (preferably less than a metre in length)

Castlemaine and Maldon Waste Facilities will be closed on Christmas day and New Year’s Day. For more information and frequently asked questions visit www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/wastefacilities.
