Wednesday 3 January 2018

Australia Day is a great opportunity for the community to get together and this year participants can look forward to another fun and family-friendly day.

Everyone is invited to head to Victory Park in Castlemaine and enjoy a day of free activities and entertainment including barbecue lunch and live music, along with a bouncy castle and face painting for kids.

Mount Alexander Shire Council will announce its Citizen of the Year awards and hold a ceremony to welcome the community’s newest Australian citizens.

“The ceremony is a wonderful part of Australia Day and I look forward to introducing our newest citizens and recognising the fabulous effort of our hard working community volunteers through our citizens of the year awards,” said Bronwen Machin, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire.

This year Council is working closely with Upper Loddon Indigenous group Nalderun to plan its Australia Day activities, which will include a Survival Day component led by Dja Dja Wurrung Elders.

Mayor Machin said the approach will allow the community to celebrate Australia’s national day while recognising the important shared history of our Indigenous community.

“We are very proud to be working with Dja Dja Wurrung Elders and community to acknowledge and embrace our whole history and encourage open discussions about the impact of Australia Day on the Indigenous community,” she said.

“It is very powerful for the community to have these conversations and I encourage everyone to come along and join together and embrace this important day,” said Cr Machin.
