Street tree pruning to start soon

Tree pruning in Mount Alexander Shire

Tree pruning around powerlines will start in Castlemaine soon as part of Council's street tree maintenance program.

Tree pruning will soon commence to provide clearance around powerlines in Castlemaine, as part of Council’s ongoing street tree maintenance program.

Mount Alexander Shire Council Parks and Gardens Coordinator Stewart Campbell said the works will be undertaken by qualified contractors to achieve clearance around electrical lines to meet electric safety regulations.

“The regulations set out the minimum clearances required between powerlines and trees to reduce the risk of fire, blackouts and power surges,” said Mr Campbell.

“The shape and character of the trees will be retained where possible. Trees on private property will not be pruned,” he said.

Council has responsibility for maintaining vegetation that interferes with powerlines on road reserves in the Declared Area of Castlemaine.

Local energy distributor Powercor is responsible for maintaining the trees on road reserves outside the boundary in areas such as McKenzie Hill.

The Country Fire Authority offers an online vegetation clearing tool to determine whether you need a permit to clear trees, branches and other vegetation from around your home.
