Mount Alexander Shire has a new Councillor following the election of Stephen Gardner to the Tarrengower ward vacancy.

Councillor Gardner fills the vacancy created by the resignation of former Mayor Sharon Telford in October 2017.

The extraordinary vacancy was filled through a by-election conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC).

Cr Gardner thanked his family for their role throughout the election process.

“Thanks to the support of my wife, Kylie, and my father-in-law, Stuart, who did a great job of spruiking me to everyone in the street,” said Cr Gardner.

“I’m looking forward to filling the vacancy and working with everyone in the community and at Council,” he said.

Mayor Bronwen Machin said Councillors and staff were very happy to have Cr Gardner on board.

“It’s great for Maldon, Baringhup and surrounds to once again have their own representative on Council,” said Mayor Machin.

“We welcome Stephen and look forward to having him on the team for the benefit of the entire shire,” she said.

Councillor Gardner took the Oath of Office and made a declaration to abide by the Councillor Code of Conduct today.

Along with Mayor Machin, Cr Gardner joins Mount Alexander Shire Councillors John Nieman, Christine Henderson, Tony Cordy and Dave Petrusma.

There is one councillor in the Tarrengower Ward, elected under the proportional system of voting.

Former Councillor Robin Taylor resigned earlier this month. A countback for the Castlemaine Ward will be held on Monday 5 March. The process is conducted by the VEC.
