Following repeated incidents of vandalism and graffiti, Mount Alexander Shire Council is now locking the public toilets at Victory Park and the Drill Hall on Lyttleton Street overnight.

Rebecca Stockfeld, Acting Director, Sustainable Development at Mount Alexander Shire Council, said the toilets at Victory Park have become a regular target for damage.

“We would prefer to provide public conveniences in Castlemaine at all hours but we can’t keep repairing and repainting these toilets,” said Ms Stockfeld.

“The endless incidences of graffiti and destructive vandalism are costing our shire financially, degrading our infrastructure and creating a poor impression to visitors of our town.

“It’s is always disappointing when the actions of few do not meet what we would say are our community expectations and lead to decisions like this.

“I strongly encourage anyone who knows who is responsible to pass on what they know to Castlemaine Police for their investigation,” she said.

The Victory Park and Drill Hall toilets will now be open from 8.00am and will close at 10.00pm and security guards will monitor the sites.
