A street tree planting program is underway to improve the presentation of urban streets and public spaces in Mount Alexander Shire. Around 250 trees will be planted in Castlemaine, Taradale and Newstead over the next month.

While most trees will be planted in residential streets, trees will be planted in the Taradale Mineral Springs Reserve and Recreation Reserve to replace trees lost in the storms last year.

According to Council’s Parks and Gardens Coordinator Stewart Campbell, a mix of native and introduced species will be planted.
“We will be planting species such as Oak, Elm, Crepe Myrtle, Acacia and Eucalyptus to improve the presentation and liveability of these areas,” said Mr Campbell.

“The trees were selected based on their growth characteristics and suitability for the site, as well as their potential to contribute to the character of the street or landscape.

“In established areas, we continue with the existing species or themes to ensure the character of the streetscape is maintained.
“In streets where there are opportunities for substantial planting to improve amenity and character, we consulted with local residents and property owners,” he said.

Households in several streets were able to choose from three tree species by responding to a survey in the mail. The trees selected included White Cedar, Golden Rain Tree and Autumn Blaze Maple.

The tree planting program is part of Council’s commitment to improving streetscapes and town entrances in the shire.
Future plantings will occur once streetscape plans for individual towns are completed. Council conducted a tree planting program in Harcourt in 2016.
