A new roundtable formed to make Mount Alexander Shire a more inclusive place for LGBTIQ+ people met for the first time this week.

The Mount Alexander LGBTIQ+ Roundtable met on Wednesday 12 June, bringing together 12 community members and four representatives from Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Mount Alexander Shire Mayor Bronwen Machin, who chaired the meeting, said it was pleasing to have the roundtable up and running with strong community involvement.

“The newly formed roundtable aims to ensure that LGBTIQ+ people in Mount Alexander enjoy the full respect and equality guaranteed through the Victorian Human Rights Charter.

“We will be looking at how we can involve and partner with local organisations, community groups, businesses and individuals to further the aims of the roundtable and ensure our community is an inclusive place for all.

“We can then work with our partners to explore opportunities to advocate to the state and federal governments for those services needed and identified by the LGBTIQ+ community.”

The formation of a roundtable to support equality arose from a motion at a Council Meeting in September last year, at the time of the marriage equality survey.

“Council has since convened several meetings with community members to work through the details of the roundtable - things like who should be involved, how people can apply and what the Terms of Reference should be,” said Mayor Machin.

“It is so important that this initiative is community led and would like to thank all the community members, groups and organisations who have attended meetings and provided feedback to help us get to where we are now.”

Roundtable members were selected by an Expressions of Interest Process, and include Sherene Clow, Martyn Shaddick, Lisa Levis, Dee Amela Conti, Matthew Feeney, Pauline Bolch, David Farrington, Belinda Brain, Athena Williams, Christopher Burgess and Alana Wearne.

They join Mayor Bronwen Machin (Co-Chair), Cr John Neiman, CEO Darren Fuzzard and Director of Corporate and Community Services Lisa Knight from Council.

At the first meeting it was agreed to hold bi-monthly meetings to the end of 2018, and meetings will co-chaired by a community member.

“The community has been so strongly involved in this process, and jointly led meetings send a clear message that we are all working together to make our community a better place for all.”
