Update on Saint Street works

Drainage outfall under the road near Saint Street in Castlemaine.

Thursday 22 November 2018

Council has completed stage one of a three-stage program to improve drainage and reduce the risk of flooding to homes in the vicinity of Saint Street and Greenhill Avenue Castlemaine.

Stage one works included the installation of a new drainage outfall at Forest Creek and the installation of drainage pipes in Greenhill Avenue and Saint Street.

Greenhill Avenue and Saint Streets are now open. The intersection on the corner of Saint and Barker streets remains closed as Council explores the option to improve safety and reduce traffic at the intersection with VicRoads.

“Thanks to everyone for their patience while we completed this much needed work,” said Tanya Goddard, Executive Manager Infrastructure, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Traffic movements in Saint Street have been an issue for consideration for some time.

“The recent works provided the opportunity for us to trial a road closure at the western end of Saint Street and feedback from residents has been really positive,” said Ms Goddard.

“We are in discussions with VicRoads regarding the possibility of restricting right turning traffic movements at the intersection with Barker Street, while allowing a left turn in and out of Saint Street,” she said.

Council is hoping to have a permanent solution in place before Christmas, pending VicRoads approval.

Temporary barriers remain in place in the short term. Traffic can continue to take the alternative route via Forest Street.
