Have a say on kindergarten enrolment

Children playing at kindergarten in Maldon

Monday 29 April 2019

If you have preschool aged children or have recently had children attend a 4 year old funded kindergarten program, Mount Alexander Shire Council wants to hear about your experiences with the enrolment process.

Council has received funding from the Department of Education and Training to investigate the value of adopting and implementing a central enrolment scheme for kindergarten in the shire.

“A central enrolment process can enable equal access to kindergarten places for eligible children in a fair, easy and clear way,” said David Leathem, Council’s Acting Director Corporate and Community Services.

“We would like to hear about the experiences of the enrolment process for parents and carers through a short five minute survey,” said Mr Leathem.

Everyone who enters can go into the draw to win a $100 voucher for books or a massage.

Council is investigating the enrolment process as part of the Early Years Plan 2018-2020. The plan highlighted an opportunity to work with the community and kindergarten service providers to promote and simplify kindergarten enrolments.

“We know that central enrolment schemes operate in other shires and we want to determine whether this is the best way forward for our community and if so, how it might work,” said Mr Leathem.

Research shows that there are many advantages of attending kindergarten, especially the year prior to school, which gives a child the best start to their education.

“Our goal is to improve access to the kindergarten system for vulnerable families and see all eligible four year old children enrolled at kinder,” he said.

To complete the survey visit Council’s website at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay. Printed copies will be available at the Civic Centre, Castlemaine Library, Maternal Child Health Centre at 15 Lyttleton Street, Castlemaine and at local kindergarten and child care centres.

The survey opens Monday 29 April and will close on Friday 17 May.
