Baby change facilities are now available at the Ray Bradfield Room in Castlemaine thanks to a partnership between Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA).

“We have advocated for more baby change facilities in our shire and we are very excited that Council has taken this initiative,” said Rachel Honeychurch, Group Leader, ABA Castlemaine and District.

“Having accessible changing facilities at the Ray Bradfield Room is a wonderful resource for parents and helps to create a much more family friendly venue,” said Ms Honeychurch.

Council officers are working with the ABA to increase the number of breastfeeding friendly venues by supporting the implementation of ABA’s ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here Program’. This is a commitment in the four-year Council Plan and recently adopted Early Years Plan.

“Council is one of 18 organisations and businesses around the shire that are Breastfeeding Welcome Here venues,” said Lisa Knight, Director Corporate and Community Services, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“It’s great to see so many local businesses that welcome breastfeeding and we encourage others to sign up and show their support,” said Ms Knight.

The ABA Castlemaine and District group will launch the program at the Early Years Forum during World Breast Feeding Week in August.

The ABA work closely with Council’s Maternal and Child Health Nurses in providing support and assistance to new parents. ABA also provide a feed and change tent at Council’s Australia Day community event each year.

The group holds bi-monthly meetings in the Castlemaine area hosted by trained breastfeeding counsellors and community educators.
