More than 150 businesses have been nominated for a Mount Alexander Business Award, coming from a total of more than 300 nominations received across the Shire.

The next step is for businesses to enter the awards before the 7 October deadline, said David Leathem, Manager, Economy and Culture, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“Thank you to everyone who nominated a business for an award - we were pleased to receive 335 nominations.

“It’s wonderful to see the local community get behind our local businesses and recognise the great work they are doing.

Council is contacting the nominees to provide more information on how to enter the awards, which is designed to be practical and aligned with the business planning process.

Business Manager Julie Roberts from Kowelec Electrical Services recommends local businesses enter the awards, regardless of what stage their business is at.

“We were thrilled to be recognised as Business of the Year in the 2017 Mount Alexander Business Awards,” said Ms Roberts.

“We took a great deal of pride in winning the award and found the awards provided us with a great opportunity to reflect on our business. Applying for the awards gives you the chance to review and focus on what you do and how you do it,” she said.

“We are constantly working to improve our business processes, offer a great experience for our customers and support our local community.

“The awards gave us some great feedback on how we were performing. They also recognise how businesses in our region are collectively providing a great network for services, trades and employment opportunities for Mount Alexander Shire.”

The Mount Alexander Business Awards are run by Mount Alexander Shire Council in partnership with the Midland Express/Castlemaine Mail. They are supported by Business Mount Alexander, Good Earth Garden Supplies, Maldon Inc, Maldon & District Community Bank®, Small Business Victoria and Workspace Australia.

Businesses can enter the awards in up to two of the following categories: Manufacturing, Construction and Trade, Agribusiness, Retail and Hospitality, Tourism and Events, Micro Business, Professional Services, Creative Industries, Health and Wellbeing.

There will also award for Business of the Year and best practice in accessibility.

A full list of nominees will be published in The Midland Express and on the awards website on Tuesday 17 September. The winners will be announced at a gala event in December.
