Join our climate change forum

Council will hold a Climate Change Forum on Monday 9 December to inform its future action on climate change. The forum will help Councillors better understand community views on what a climate change emergency would mean for the shire, and other ways to tackle changing climate conditions. The public forum will take place over a series of sessions held between 9.00am and 8.00pm on Monday 9 December in the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre. Interested speakers must return the registration form by Monday 2 December. Find the form at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay and the Civic Centre. You can also make a written submission by Thursday 5 December. Email your submission titled Action on Climate Change to info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au or send it by mail to PO Box 185 Castlemaine VIC 3450.

Nominate for Australia Day Awards

If you know a local person who has given outstanding service to the community nominate them now for the 2020 Mount Alexander Shire Australia Day Awards. Categories are Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year. Find the nomination form at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/AustraliaDay, the Civic Centre or Visitor Information Centres at Castlemaine or Maldon. Nominations close at 5.00pm on Friday 6 November.

Feedback on streetscape plan

A revised streetscape plan and design standards for Castlemaine is now available for community feedback. The draft plan aims to create a more attractive and functional town centre while working with and preserving the historical features. The streetscape plan and design standards will guide Council and the community in the management, maintenance and improvement of the town. Find the plans at the historic Market Building on Mostyn Street, Castlemaine and at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/HaveYourSay. Submit your feedback form to Council by 5.00pm on Sunday 8 December.

Draft Plan Harcourt – Have Your Say

The draft Plan Harcourt, incorporating the Harcourt Framework Plan and Shine Harcourt Leanganook, will be available for review and comment from Wednesday 20 November. Council invites the community to attend a drop-in session to find out more about the plan.

Sessions will be held at the ANA Hall at 7 High Street in Harcourt from:
• 4.00pm to 7.30pm, Wednesday 20 November
• 4.00pm to 7.30pm, Wednesday 11 December.

The project team will also be available to talk about the plan at the Harcourt Twilight Market on Saturday 23 November.

Temporary library closure

Library services will be unavailable for one week while the team transitions from the pop-up library in the Market Building to the refurbished library on Mechanics Lane. The pop-up library will close at 5.00pm on Tuesday 12 November. The refurbished library will open at 10.00am on Wednesday 20 November. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Fruit Fly workshops

If you grow fruit or vegetables in your backyard or commercially, come along to a free workshop to learn what you can do to help prevent an outbreak of Queensland fruit fly in our shire. Fruit fly attacks many different types of fruits and vegetables, and if left uncontrolled can lead to total crop losses.

Newstead – 1.00pm to 3.00pm on Thursday 28 November at Newstead Community Centre.
Maldon – 6.00pm to 8.00pm on Thursday 28 November at Maldon Community Centre.
Castlemaine – 10.00am to 12.00noon on Friday 29 November at Town Hall, Lyttleton Street.

Council is collaborating with Harcourt Valley Fruit Fly Action Group and Agriculture Victoria to present the workshops. A workshop will also be held in Harcourt in early 2020.
