Cr Christine Henderson is the new Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire for a one year term after being elected by Councillors at a Special Meeting of Council last night.

Cr Henderson has served on Council for nearly 11 years as the representative for the Coliban Ward. She was first elected in December 2008, and previously served as Mayor from November 2014 to October 2016.

Cr Max Lesser was elected Deputy Mayor for the 2019/2020 term. Cr Lesser first joined Council in March last year when he filled an extraordinary vacancy through an election countback in the Castlemaine ward.

Cr Henderson thanked councillors for their confidence in her and highlighted the importance of the last term before the Council elections next year.

“The year ahead is an important one as we move into the last year of our Council Plan, and preparation of a budget that we’ll hand over to the new Council toward the end of next year,” said Mayor Christine Henderson.

“We have climate the change forum coming up in a few weeks where we hope to hear a range of views on how we can work with the community to best react and adapt to this problem to help us decide if we declare a climate change emergency and shape our future actions.

“There’s also new Local Government Act passing through parliament that we’ll need to respond to and I would like to see us significantly progress the actions in Plan Harcourt,” she said.

Cr Henderson offered a huge, heartfelt thank you to Cr Bronwen Machin for her contribution in the role of Mayor for more than two years.

“Cr Machin has done a terrific job in all aspects of the role and has worked extremely hard at all levels in representing our community and shire. It’s going to be hard to follow in her footsteps,” she said.

Cr Henderson ended her acceptance speech with a tribute to her fellow councillors.

“In my experience on Council for more than 10 years, this is the best yet. We each bring a diverse range of views, expertise and opinions. I think we are in a great place and I look forward to the challenges ahead,” she said.

During the meeting, Council set the council meeting dates for 2020 and appointed councillors as representatives on committees.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is comprised of seven councillors elected by residents and ratepayers from five wards. To find out more about your local Council or view the broadcast of the meeting visit www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au
