Lovers of Castlemaine Library helped to officially open the newly refurbished space at a morning tea event last week.

More than 75 people of all ages gathered together to share stories and cake and celebrate the wonderful new space.

“The refurbishment has made such a difference to our library and we are just so thrilled to be back home,” said Jess Saunders, Manager of Castlemaine Library.

“Special thanks to the staff who worked so hard to pack up and relocate to the Market Building, and then bring everything back here in time for the opening in November,” said Ms Saunders.

“I’m so proud of all your effort and the amazing job you do for our community,” she said.

Maree Edwards MP, Mayor Christine Henderson, Deputy Mayor Max Lesser, Cr John Nieman, Mark Hands CEO Goldfields Library and Council CEO Darren Fuzzard were also in attendance, along with Friends of Castlemaine Library, staff, volunteers and community members.

“The library is such an important and popular place and the refurbishment makes it even more welcoming,” said Christine Henderson, Mayor of Mount Alexander Shire.

“Thank you to the community for your patience during the upgrade. We hope you agree that it was well worth the wait,” said Cr Henderson.

The upgrade included excavation works, new stumps and flooring, new shelving, booth seating, replacement library returns chute, paintwork and more. A pop-up library was located at the historic Market Building in Mostyn Street for five months while the works were underway.

“Along with all the large structural changes there are so many smaller upgrades that make such a difference to how we use the space,” said Ms Saunders.

“The relocatable shelving means we can move them around and use the area in different ways. We also now have additional computers and an extra printer, which library visitors have really appreciated,” she said.

“We’d love to see people getting back into the habit of visiting the library, and see some new faces too. Now is a great time to come and visit us too, as we have a fines amnesty for the whole month of December!”

The opening followed on from a popular storytime session for pre-school aged children and young families. Entertainment included balloon art, face painting, a performance by MaCapella and multimedia slide show, along with a special celebratory cake.

The project was funded by Council and the Victorian Government 2018 Pick My Project grant, as voted by members of the community. Thank you to everyone who voted to secure funding for the project.
