Council's response to coronavirus (COVID-19)

Find out what Council is doing in response to coronavirus (COVID-19) and how we are supporting the Department of Health and Human Service (DHHS) as the lead agency responsible for responding to the virus.

Current situation

We understand that this is a challenging time for everyone and we are doing what we can to help reduce the impact of the pandemic within our community.

We have activated our regional pandemic plan and business continuity plans to ensure we continue the delivery of essential services during this emergency, while placing priority of the health of our community, staff and volunteers.

Council facilities are closed to the public and we’ve made some changes to how we deliver services to help limit the spread of COVID-19. We also announced some initial measures in March to reduce financial pressures on businesses and the community including:

• A one month extension on the due date for the fourth rates instalment, to 30 June.
• Establishment of a Council COVID-19 financial hardship policy.
• A temporary hold on following up unpaid animal registrations (due 10 April).
• Payment to suppliers in weekly payment schedules.
• A reduction of commercial rents in Council-owned buildings until 30 June 2020, for businesses significantly impacted by COVID-19.

Currently, Australia does not have widespread community transmission of the disease however the situation is changing daily. As a result, we are making decisions based on the most recent advice from state and federal health authorities.

We encourage residents to follow the precautions to minimise spread and infection for the benefit of everyone. Look out for each other and check in on your family, friends and neighbours that might need assistance.

To help and connect our community at this time, we have set up a dedicated helpline and email to assist residents and business dealing with the impacts of COVID-19. For information or a referral to a local community organisation or service, call us on 1800 512 446 between 8.30am and 5.00pm (Monday to Friday) or send an email to covid19@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

If you feel you, or someone you know, is not coping, it’s important to seek help. Information and support is available either by calling Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 or visiting the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services website.

Information and advice

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is the lead agency responsible for responding to COVID-19 in Victoria, and is working with national and international agencies to respond to the outbreak.

The best place for up-to-date information and guidance about the outbreak of COVID-19 is www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus. If you suspect you have coronavirus or need advice call the dedicated Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you have serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, call 000 and ask for an ambulance.

The Australian Government Department of Health (DH) is a useful resource for information about COVID-19 and national statistics at www.health.gov.au.

The Australian Government has also released an official app with the information you need to know about coronavirus. Search ‘Coronavirus Australia’ in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.
