Works will begin this month to upgrade and extend footpaths along the northern and southern sides of Main Street (Pyrenees Highway) in Chewton.

An 880 metre section of footpath will be upgraded between Adelaide and Railway streets on the southern side of the road. A 240 metre section will be upgraded on the northern side of the road, from the General Store to Angus Street.

The new footpath will be constructed of asphalt.

The project also includes the construction of a crossing point near the Chewton General Store to provide safer pedestrian access across Main Street.

“We’re very pleased to be able to deliver this project for the community, as we know they have been seeking improvements to local footpaths for many years,” said Jess Howard, Director Infrastructure and Development.

“Footpaths and a safer pedestrian crossing point across the highway were key elements within the Chewton Streetscape Plan,” said Ms Howard.

“The upgraded and extended sections of footpath will help to safely connect residents and visitors to traders and facilities in Chewton”.

The crossing point near the General Store will be unmonitored, which means it will not have traffic signals or a zebra crossing. The kerb will be increased on both sides of the highway highlighting to motorists it is a designated crossing point, and providing pedestrians a narrower section of road to cross.

Traffic management will be in place during the construction phase of the project.

Work will begin in mid-February and is scheduled to be completed in May, weather permitting.

Care will be taken to minimise the impact to residents and local businesses.

Council liaised with the following community groups when planning this project, including representatives from Chewton Pool Inc, Chewton Primary School and the Chewton Domain Society.

Council acknowledges the generous funding from the 2020 TAC Local Government Grant Program to assist with the delivery of this project.
