Mount Alexander Shire Councillors adopted a new Councillor Code of Conduct at last nights’ Ordinary Council Meeting in Castlemaine.

The Councillor Code of Conduct guides how Councillors will conduct themselves while elected representatives, and sets out the principles and standards of behaviour expected when carrying out their roles, responsibilities and obligations.

The code also outlines the role of the Councillor in relation to the Chief Executive Officer, and Council staff.

Mount Alexander Shire Mayor Tony Cordy said the Councillor Code of Conduct is an important commitment for Councillors.

“The code is an agreed standard of behaviour for Councillors, with the aim of enabling us to govern more effectively”, said Mayor, Cr Cordy.

“I know that each of the current Councillors are committed to putting into practise the principles and behaviours outlined in the document, and by adopting the code last night at the Council meeting we’re demonstrating that.”

“The Councillor Code of Conduct is a very important document, along with the Community Engagement Policy adopted at the same meeting.”

Council is required under the Local Government Act 2020 to adopt a new Councillor Code of Conduct within four months of the Council elections, which were held on 24 October 2020.
