Smoky wood heaters

Wood heater in a home.

Wood heaters are a great source of warmth however, wood heaters and open fire places are a major contributor to outdoor air pollution and can cause health problems for those with respiratory illnesses.

If not operated correctly wood heaters and open fires can cause problems to residents of neighbouring properties. To find out more about health problems associated with wood smoke, how to reduce wood smoke and how to manage the problem with a neighbour see Related links below.

Talk to your neighbour respectfully if their wood heater is producing a lot of smoke. They may not even be aware there is a problem. If this doesn't work contact a Public and Environmental Health Officer on (03) 5471 1700 or submit an online service request.
