Council is pleased to advise that the installation of Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSI’s) within the Castlemaine Town Centre is now complete.

The indicators will improve accessibility in the Castlemaine central business district (CBD) for all pedestrians, particularly for those living with visual impairment.

We thank the community and traders for their patience and co-operation during the works.

Background

In 2018 Council’s Access and Inclusion Survey identified wayfinding as a barrier to accessibility within some sections of the community. In response to this, and through collaboration with Guide Dogs Victoria, works were undertaken to improve the Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) at specific locations in the Castlemaine town centre.

Project outline

The works were completed at the intersections of:

• Barker and Lyttleton streets
• Hargraves and Forest streets
• Hargraves and Mostyn streets
• Lloyd and Lyttleton streets.

The works were completed in the CBD and prime business area, and on road reserves controlled by Council and the Department of Transport.

The scope of the work included:

- Installation of surface applied TGSIs
- Removal and disposal of existing TGSIs (as required)
- Removal and disposal of existing asphalt footpath as required for the installation of surface applied TGSIs
- Reinstatement of disturbed areas including the road pavement, verge, table drains and nature strip areas

The works comply with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
