Froomes Road bridge replacement

Project summary

This project involves the construction of a new two lane concrete bridge and associated civil works to replace existing single lane timber and concrete bridge on Froomes Road.

Froomes Road Bridge was assessed as needing replacement following a condition assessment undertaken in February 2018. The assessment found that the bridge was at its end of life, with several serious structural issues identified. Vehicle load restrictions apply.

A design for a replacement bridge was previously completed with:
• The new structure accommodating two lanes of traffic to match the road width.
• The deck level being raised to reduce the risk of complete inundation.
• The barriers complying to current standards and incorporating heritage consideration if possible.

Where are we now

We are working with the Froomes Road Action Group and residents regarding what the end design looks like, noting concerns in relation to the overlays which are adjacent to the road reserve.

We are also going to pursue, through the Department of Transport, a reduction in speed limit on Richards Road prior to the intersection with Mary Street.

What happens next

We are hoping to resolve all issues in relation to the bridge design as soon as possible in order to progress construction in FY21/22, subject to budget approval.
