Maldon-Lockwood Road level crossing upgrade

Project update

V/Line, on behalf of the Department of Transport and in co-operation with Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR), are currently working to improve safety and upgrade the level crossing at Maldon-Lockwood Road, Maldon.

Design considerations

This project has originated as a safety improvement (noting the current sighting lines are currently unobstructed with low level grass).

During detailed design, the Maldon-Tip Road entrance to the intersection was highlighted as a risk required to be mitigated. The Maldon-Tip Road gravel path will be redirected for road users to turn right onto Maldon-Lockwood Road, to ensure vehicles approach from behind the Maldon-Lockwood Road stop line to improve sighting distances and safety at the level crossing.

To close off the existing gravel path, V/Line, VGR and Council have worked together to identify possible fence options. The currently preferred option includes post and rail fencing which delineates the vehicle movements outside the area, and maintains the heritage feel of the area and railway (as shown).

V/Line, VGR and Council are seeking community feedback on fencing options – please email these to s.eagle@mountalexander.vic.gov.au by 4 January 2021.

Construction

This project is being delivered by V/Line. Progress in relation to construction will be announced by V/Line in due course.
