Footpath renewal projects for Castlemaine CBD

Project aim

Castlemaine town centre is a pedestrian friendly, vibrant, attractive and well utilised central area.

Poor quality footpaths create unnecessary risk for pedestrians accessing the town centre.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is focused on improving accessibility and encouraging walking throughout the Shire through the continued maintenance and improvement of its footpath network by resurfacing sections of footpath within the CBD to:

• Remove trip hazards,
• Improve accessibility,
• Improve the look of our streets, and
• Encouraging walking within our town centre.

All of the above will improve the level of service provided to the community, as well as the condition of our footpath assets.

Please note that these renewal works are required to maintain existing footpath assets – if we don’t keep maintaining them on an annual basis the degradation of our footpaths will become overwhelming! These projects are therefore funded separately to the construction of new footpaths.

Project outline

Throughout the year we receive a number of requests to fix problems on our footpaths. We also assess the condition of sections of the footpath periodically. We combine the information that we receive from both the community and our own assessments to identify high risk sections for footpaths which are then prioritised for works. Using this process, we have identified the following footpath locations for renewal this year (indicated in red on the maps below):

Where are we now

The contract for the renewal works have been awarded to Dredge Earthmoving Pty Ltd. Construction works are due to commence at the start of May 2021. Target date for completion is end of June, weather permitting.

To undertake these works in a safe and efficient manner traffic management will be required. Access to affected properties will be maintained during the course of the works and care will be taken to minimise the impact of the works.

Council apologises for any inconvenience that these works may cause.
