Footpath renewal projects 2021-2022

Enabling connectivity through a well maintained safe & accessible footpath network. Poor quality footpath assets create risks for pedestrians and cyclists accessing the town centre.

Project aim

Mount Alexander Shire Council is focused on improving accessibility and encouraging walking throughout the shire through the continued maintenance and improvement of its footpath network by:

• Replacing sections of footpath within the CBD that are past their useful lifespan, thereby significantly improving their condition and the level of service provided to the community
• Increasing accessibility by improving the quality of footpath and reducing trip hazards

Please note that renewal works are different to construction of new footpaths – the latter of which are identified through the budget process.

Project outline

Throughout the year we receive a number of requests to fix problems on our footpaths. We also assess the condition of sections of the footpath periodically. We combine the information that we receive from both the community and our own assessments to identify high risk sections for footpaths which are then prioritised for works. Using this process, we have identified the following footpath locations for renewal this year:

• Barker Street South Bound – Templeton Street to BP Service Station, Castlemaine
• Hargraves Street (East side) – Lyttleton Street to Templeton Street (School bus parking area), Castlemaine
• Barker Street South Bound - Mostyn Street to Lyttleton Street, Castlemaine
• Barker Street North Bound – South of Mostyn Street fronting the Criterion Hotel, Castlemaine
• Guildford Public Hall – Fryers Road and Templeton Street, Guildford
• Grinding / replacing pram laybacks – Castlemaine CBD
• Midland Highway/Johnstone Street School Crossing, Castlemaine
• Lyttleton Street North – fronting post office carpark, Castlemaine

The extent of locations included in the works package will be dependent on the tender process.

Where are we now

Council is currently preparing the tender documentation for the package of works. We expect the tender to close in mid-November 2021.

What happens next

We aim to have works completed by the April 2022 noting there are some COVID related challenges in the construction industry to overcome.
