Fogartys Gap Road upgrade project

Photograph showing a section of Fogartys Gap Road

Fogartys Gap Road is a rural link road between Maldon and Calder Highway. The road is a popular route for local cyclists as well as commuters between Maldon, Castlemaine and destinations further along the Calder Highway.

Project background

Mount Alexander Shire Council is proposing to reconstruct a 3.5km section of Fogartys Gap Road in Ravenswood South. The 3.5km stretch of road being reconstructed spans approximately 1.2km west of the Woodbrook Road and east to Leversha Road.

This project will improve the safety of this section of Fogartys Gap Road making it safe for all road users.

Project summary

Council has identified this section of Fogartys Gap Road as requiring treatment. The following road safety risk factors have been identified, they include narrow lane widths, high speed, unsealed shoulders, poor sight distance over crests and poor road signage.

The works have been split into two (2) Stages:

• Stage 1 - 2.24km of road between Woodbrook Road and Leversha Road and
• Stage 2 - 1.4km of road to the west of Woodbrook Road including the Woodbrook Road intersection works.

Project aim and design considerations

Map showing the location of the proposed works on Fogartys Gap Road in Ravenswood South.

Council aims to improve the condition and safety of the road for road users by:

• Reconstruction and widening the existing road to include 1.5m sealed shoulder
• Improved delineation, guideposts, cyclist and advisory speed signage
• Extending culverts and trafficable end walls
• Improved erosion control measures
• Intersection improvements at Woodbrook Road

Where are we now

Stage 1 construction works are proposed to commence in August 2022, subject to available funding.

The contract for the stage 2 works has been awarded to Leech Earthmoving Contracting Pty Ltd. Construction works are due to commence in early April 2022. Target date for completion is middle of May 2022, weather permitting.

There may be some delays to traffic during this period and to undertake these works in a safe and efficient manner traffic management will be required.

Access to affected properties will be maintained during the course of the work.
