Yeats Street Upgrade

Yeats Street, Castlemaine

This project involves the upgrade of the 200m section of Yeats Street, located between James Street and Wheeler Street, Castlemaine. The 200m section of Yeats Street, which is currently gravel with open drainage, will be sealed to reduce dust produced. It will also include the installation of kerb, storm water pits and drains to improve drainage.

This project will improve the safety of Yeats Street, reducing storm water impacts to the road and houses along this section of Yeats Street and improve safety for all road users.

Project summary

Council has identified this section of Yeats Street as requiring treatment due to drainage issues caused by stormwater flows from Wheeler Street, and dust issues in drier periods. The stormwater collected from Wheeler Street exits a 300mm diameter culvert, which travels through an open drain on the southern side of Yeats Street. This drain currently spills into the parcels on the southern side of the street and has been identified as needing improvements.

The Yeats Street Upgrade is funded by the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program and Council. Works began in January 2023 and will continue through until April 2023.

Project aim

Council aims to improve the condition for road users by:

• reconstructing, widening and sealing the existing road including installation of kerb
• improve access to all vehicles and reduce dust generation
• improve delineation of road, whilst removing hazardous trees/limbs near roads edge along Yeats Street
• improve run-off through implementation of pits to capture water and underground piping of stormwater.

Where are we now?

The contract has been awarded to Leech Earthmoving for commencement of works in January 2023.

There may be some traffic delays during this period to ensure these works are undertaken in a safe and efficient manner. Traffic management will be required and implemented to ensure access can be maintained during the course of work for properties impacted.

All addresses and residents impacted will be notified prior to commencement of works, including temporary rubbish/recycling bin pickup locations during the construction period.
