Have your say on animal management

Thursday 17 August 2017

Are you interested in animals or do you have an opinion on how pets should be managed in our shire?

If you do, take some time to review Mount Alexander Shire Council’s draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-2021.

The plan includes both pet owners’ and Council’s responsibilities for managing dogs and cats.

“The plan addresses responsible pet ownership and animal welfare with a focus on animal registration, identification, dog attacks, nuisance behaviour and restricted breeds,” said Wayne O’Toole, Civic Compliance Coordinator, Mount Alexander Shire Council.

“It also covers matters as diverse as animal businesses, management of cats and protection of pets during emergencies,” said Mr O’Toole.

More than 150 people responded to a Council survey on animal management earlier this year.

The four key issues identified were support for an off-lead dog park, concern with cats not being contained within properties, the need to educate and promote responsible pet ownership and the importance of cat de-sexing.

“Community feedback has been used to inform the plan, but we now want to make sure we’ve got it right,” said Mr O’Toole.

Council is seeking feedback from pet and non-pet owners through written submissions.

The draft plan is available on the Have Your Say section of Council’s website. Printed copies are available at the Civic Centre in Castlemaine, Castlemaine Library and Visitor Information Centres in Maldon and Castlemaine.
